Overview

exif-mcp is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides tools for extracting various metadata segments from images. Built with TypeScript, it leverages the excellent exifr library to parse metadata from images in common formats like JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and HEIC. It allows for local operation, extracting multiple segments including EXIF, GPS, XMP, ICC, IPTC, JFIF, and IHDR metadata from various input formats. The server supports flexible image sources, such as reading from the file system, URLs, base64 data, or buffers. Specialized tools include getting orientation, rotation info, GPS coordinates, and thumbnails. The tool is primarily designed for use with Large Language Models (LLMs) or humans, providing an offline solution for reading image metadata on-demand. It has been extensively used in the reverse geolocation service PlaceSpotter for development and testing. The server uses the StdioServerTransport from the MCP SDK, making it compatible with any MCP client that supports STDIO transport.

What image formats and metadata types can exif-mcp extract?

It supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC/AVIF files and can extract EXIF, GPS, XMP, ICC, IPTC, JFIF, and IHDR segments, as well as specialized data like orientation, rotation, GPS coordinates, and thumbnails.

Asked by Joanna Kowalski · May 2, 2026

Can exif-mcp work without an internet connection?

Yes, the server operates completely offline; it uses the exifr library internally and does not depend on any external services or network calls.

Asked by Margaret Whitfield · May 3, 2026

How do I integrate exif-mcp with my existing LLM or application?

exif-mcp runs as an MCP server that communicates via STDIO transport, so any MCP client supporting STDIO (or via the provided mcp proxy for remote access) can invoke its tools. You start the server with `npm start` and configure the client (e.g., Claude Desktop) to point to the server’s command path.
