Overview

The mcp-aiven tool is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects AI assistants to Aiven cloud accounts, allowing them to manage services like PostgreSQL and Apache Kafka. It enables AI agents to list projects, check services, and retrieve configurations while being limited by the user's Aiven permissions. The tool can be used with AI assistants like Claude, Cursor, and VS Code Copilot. Users must be cautious as AI agents may perform destructive actions based on their interpretation of prompts.

Key features

  • Integration with Aiven cloud data platform
  • Support for multiple Aiven services (PostgreSQL, Apache Kafka, applications)
  • Read-only mode for limited access
  • Scoped tools for focused agent context
  • Compatibility with Claude, Cursor, and VS Code Copilot

Q&A

What safety precautions should I take before allowing an AI agent to use mcp-aiven in production?

Review the agent’s actions carefully, especially write operations that could drop databases or delete services. Use read‑only mode for monitoring, enforce strict Aiven permissions, and follow your organization’s security policies and risk‑assessment procedures before granting access to sensitive resources.

Asked by Tomáš Novák · Jul 31, 2025

Which AI assistants and development environments can connect to the mcp-aiven server?

mcp-aiven works with Claude, Cursor, and VS Code Copilot. Integration is done by adding the server URL (e.g., `https://mcp.aiven.live/mcp`) to the respective tool’s MCP configuration file or settings.

Asked by Ismael Rios · Jul 30, 2025

How does mcp-aiven control what actions the AI assistant can perform on my Aiven account?

The MCP server respects the Aiven user permissions of the authenticated account, so it can only list, modify, or delete services that your Aiven user is allowed to. You can also enable read‑only mode by adding `?read_only=true` to the server URL, which blocks all write operations.
