Overview

Defapi is an AI API gateway that provides a single integration point for accessing a range of popular AI models from different providers. By consolidating access through one endpoint, it aims to simplify development workflows and reduce the overhead of managing multiple vendor accounts and SDKs. The service emphasizes cost efficiency, offering usage at lower rates than going directly to individual model providers in many cases. This makes it suitable for developers, startups, and teams looking to experiment with or deploy AI features without committing to expensive enterprise contracts. With a unified API format, Defapi lets users switch between models with minimal code changes, helping teams compare outputs, optimize for cost-performance, and avoid vendor lock-in.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: centralized usage and billing and simplifies switching between models. On balance the feature set — especially access to leading LLMs and AI services — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on developer-friendly documentation, and reduces vendor lock-in caught me off guard. Dependent on third-party model availability is why this isn't a perfect score, still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and lower cost than direct provider pricing. Centralized usage and billing fits neatly into how we already work, and unified API endpoint for multiple models removed a step we used to do by hand. but it has held up under daily use.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is centralized usage and billing — handled better than most — and reduces vendor lock-in. May lag behind providers on new model releases is my one real gripe. Worth the time if this is your use case.
