Q&A

What prerequisites must be installed before using this MCP server?

You need Node.js, an Azure subscription, and the Azure CLI installed and logged in (or another method to supply Azure credentials). The server also requires setting the `SUBSCRIPTION_ID` environment variable in the MCP configuration.

Asked by Tomáš Novák · Sep 9, 2025

Can I run custom Resource Graph queries, or am I limited to the default view?

Yes, the `query-resources` tool accepts an optional `query` parameter where you can provide any valid Azure Resource Graph query; if omitted, it runs the default query that returns resource ID, name, type, and location.

Asked by Miriam Cohen · Aug 6, 2025

How do I integrate the server with Visual Studio Code?

Clone the repo, run `npm install && npm run build`, then add a server entry in VS Code’s `settings.json` under `mcp.servers.azure resource graph` pointing to the built `index.js` and set your `SUBSCRIPTION_ID` in the `env` block. Restart VS Code and the MCP server will be available.

Asked by Victor Nguyen · Jul 12, 2025

What authentication method does the Azure Resource Graph MCP Server use?

It uses Azure DefaultAzureCredential, which automatically picks up credentials from the Azure CLI login, environment variables, managed identities, or other supported sources.
