Overview

Illustrious XL is an open-source AI image generation model focused on producing high-quality anime and illustration-style artwork. Built on a Stable Diffusion XL foundation, it is tuned to handle character-driven scenes, detailed linework, and stylistic consistency that anime artists and hobbyists typically look for. The model supports high-resolution outputs and works with the broader SDXL ecosystem, meaning it can be used inside tools like ComfyUI, Automatic1111, and Forge, and paired with LoRAs, ControlNets, and custom samplers. Because it is openly available, users can run it locally, fine-tune it, or integrate it into custom pipelines without licensing barriers. Illustrious XL is aimed at illustrators, indie game developers, VTubers, and AI art enthusiasts who want a dedicated anime-style base model rather than a general-purpose generator.

Use it every day

Honestly didn't expect to like it this much. Local and offline inference is exactly what I needed, and free and open-source with local deployment. but I reach for it almost every day now and it just clicks.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: open weights for fine-tuning and compatible with SDXL tools and LoRAs. On balance the feature set — especially sDXL-based anime-focused architecture — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. SDXL-based anime-focused architecture just works and high-resolution image output. Setup can be technical for beginners can be annoying, but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on supports LoRA and ControlNet extensions, and high-resolution image output caught me off guard. Setup can be technical for beginners is why this isn't a perfect score, still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is open weights for fine-tuning — handled better than most — and compatible with SDXL tools and LoRAs. Requires a capable GPU for smooth use is my one real gripe. Worth the time if this is your use case.

Q&A

What is Illustrious XL?

Illustrious XL (ILXL) is an open-source, SDXL-based generative AI model created by OnomaAI Research, optimized for high-resolution 1536x1536 anime-style art and illustration.

Asked by Wanjiru Kamau · Jan 20, 2026

How is it different from standard SDXL or Pony Diffusion?

Unlike standard SDXL (1024px), ILXL natively generates at 1536px. Compared to Pony Diffusion, ILXL acts more as an untuned, stylistically neutral 'base canvas', making it highly flexible for LoRA training and custom checkpoints without forcing a specific art style.

Asked by Miriam Cohen · Dec 24, 2025

How should I format my prompts?

ILXL uses a Hybrid Prompting System. You can write a natural English sentence describing the scene, followed by a comma-separated list of Danbooru tags for specific details (e.g., character traits, clothing, background elements).

Asked by Anders Lindgren · Dec 18, 2025

What are the differences between the versions (v1.0, v2.0, v3.5)?

v1.0 introduced the 1536px resolution. v2.0 STABLE brought improved fine-tuning stability and predictable color science via cosine annealing. v3.5 VPred is the final SDXL iteration, utilizing V-Prediction for maximized dynamic range and structural adherence.

Asked by Renata Silva · Nov 24, 2025

Can I use it commercially?

Illustrious XL is released under open-source licenses (CreativeML OpenRAIL-M / Fair AI Public License). However, OnomaAI explicitly prohibits using the model for closed-source proprietary monetization.
