Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on prebuilt prompts for literature review and paraphrasing, and chat with and summarize uploaded PDFs caught me off guard. still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and chat with and summarize uploaded PDFs. AI-assisted academic writing and proofreading fits neatly into how we already work, and note-taking linked to source documents removed a step we used to do by hand. Advanced features require a paid plan, which is the main caveat, but it has held up under daily use.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. Reference and citation management just works and library of research-specific AI prompts. but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: pDF reading, summarization, and Q&A and purpose-built features for academic writing and reading. On balance the feature set — especially data analysis support for research projects — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.

While Avidnote can be used to aid you in your research writing, it is not meant to replace the research process itself. We do not recommend that you submit the outputted text as your own without rewriting it, adding to it, modifying it, and adding proper sources. It is important to note that AI support tools like Avidnote are here to support you in the writing process, you as the researcher, are however responsible for utilizing the outputted text in way that is ethically sound. AI writing tools provide us as educators an opportunity to teach students the importance of never submitting work that they have not produced themselves. We need to encourage students to develop their own ideas and to use AI tools as a supplement to their research, not as a replacement for it.
